New ATV exhausts from Tom Carlson's TCR Racing Series
For all racing fans waiting for new Tom Carlson exhausts, there are now three new ones to choose from. Carlson's talent and imagination have created a new exhaust for Yamaha, the YFZ450 (part# 865-4450), Honda, the TRX450 (part# 865-3450) and Suzuki, the LTZ450 (part# 865-5450; see photo on the left). The SuperTrapp TCR Racing Series Exhausts are designed with a stepped-headpipe system, giving riders the ability to maintain broad power delivery throughout the powerband. At the Race Track with Mike Hacker
July 8, 2006

Magical at Mineral Wells
The night unfolded without any major flaws. I had a really bad start in my heat and was passed by the entire second row. I got mad at myself but remembered the lines that other racers used in the past, so I decided to run the high line. The bike was hooked up then and I was catching the others two by two. I had no traffic to worry about as no one else was running my lines. My determination was strong as I set sail to the front of the pack. Seeing Russell, McCoy and Roeder all trying to finish second and putting pressure on each other to do so, I capitalized on the opportunity and went for it. Roeder went high and "Johnny 5" (my SuperTrapp/Doc's Harley Davidson/ Nort Racing K&N Backed XR 750) turned on a dime for the pass and a finish second in the heat. The bike was singing a song, and I was waiting for the next verse.

I was turning some real fast laps in the 24-second bracket and knew that we were going to be fierce for the final. With my struggles in the past, something was different this time. I had a feeling we were going to come out on top. That feeling made me nervous. Nervous because I was going so good, a light bulb went off and I was back. And as we all know, many of my good feelings don't have great endings.

Johnny Goad prepped me with some much-needed pep talks-- told me to go out and do what I do. He has this way about him; it is very encouraging.

For the main I had first pick on the second row. Chris Carr was on top of his game, so knowing that, I picked the position behind him. Off the line I saw both Mees and Coolbeth hit a rut; when Coolbeth hit it, he went down right in front of me. I avoided him and the red flag came out. Back to the hot box. I was mentally frustrated and told myself to calm down: "Breathe, Hacker, breathe."

The second restart I had a much better start off the line and I passed Mees down the back straight, which put me right behind Carr. I was running the Carr pace, for which I was thrilled, and not over running it. I had better drives off 1 and 2 than Carr, and went past him into the lead. For a bit I just went into the zone...

Halfway, someone hit the hay bales and I made some minor mistakes; then Carr took over the lead. I was right there... "Breathe, Hacker, breathe..." Five laps to go Red Flag. "I have another shot at Chris; this time it's gonna count." I collected my thoughts, had a great start, and "Johnny 5" was singing the chorus... I had some more good drives in 1 and 2; I was there on the tire waiting for my move and not giving up an inch... Carr throws his hand up, and I cross the finish line...HOLY COW, I WON THE NATIONAL!

I really didn't believe it at first. All my emotions swirled up; it was weird. I have worked so hard and been through some major obstacles. Things just aren't easy for me as a racer. When I crossed the line I knew this is why I continue to do this.

I personally thank SuperTrapp/Doc's Harley Davidson/ Tom Norton/ She Loves Racing/ K&N and my entire sponsorship list for believing in me when most people counted me out. Thank you to my family, Kenny Coolbeth, Johnny Goad and the Davis Family for your motivation and for helping me achieve my dream. Also a special thanks to Pat Moroney.

SuperTrapp Rides the Legendary Black Hills
Aaron Olson, Distribution Sales Manager at SuperTrapp recently had the opportunity to ride along with 100 motorcycle dealers and Drag Specialties management. This gave Olson a chance to get firsthand information about what's hot today among motorcycle enthusiasts. The event was the First Annual Drag Specialties Black Hills Run in Rapid City, South Dakota. It ran from June 4 to 7. According to Olson, “The inaugural Black Hills Run was an immediate success with everyone who attended. From SuperTrapp's vantage point, it gave us an excellent opportunity to interact with the V-Twin industry's premier dealers and distributor. As 'one rider to another' I could talk with dealers and the distributor about our products and get valuable feedback from them about SuperTrapp - feedback that we can apply to product design and distribution - to make us even more responsive to the sport and the industry.”

Racer Profile
Matt White

Matt, with the Tom Carlson Racing Team, has been racing for 8 years. The 2006 Pro Am National winner is an avid fan of the new TCR Series racing exhaust for the Yamaha YFZ450 and Honda 450R. White has a TCR exhaust on his Yamaha.

“What I like about the TCR Series,” said White, is that it never runs flat. You put it on a stock bike and you've got great bottom, mid- and top-end power. The beauty of the exhaust is that I can adjust it to fit the engine. It fits properly and it doesn't burn a hole in the air box - which some of the other exhausts will do.

“The exhaust is also a cinch to install and it never flops - from the low to high end - in thrust or power. It's the most complete exhaust I've seen since I've been racing.”

In Werner's Words

Bill Werner holds the honor as being the most successful tuner in AMA Grand National history with 13 championships to his credit. He spent 38 years as a racing mechanic for Harley-Davidson, always striving to squeeze every last bit of power from the Harley engine. Werner's been using SuperTrapp pipes since the 70s when he discovered that tunable technology allowed him to meet sound requirements and still gain power.

When he retired in 2004, Bill agreed to lend his years of experience to SuperTrapp. Since then he's helped SuperTrapp develop race and street systems with ultimate power and performance. He's also agreed to share some stories and Werner Wisdom with you.

What's New in the Werner Camp
We've completed testing for the CRF 450 for Honda racing, and by the time Pipeline readers get this message, the exhaust system will be available at SuperTrapp dealers nationwide. And that's a high note for riders. This is one sweet pipe. It's off-road legal with a closed end-cap that makes it Forestry Approved - which means it won't create sparks that might cause a forest fire. To my knowledge, very few manufacturers offer this option. And of course, the CRF 450 offers the tunability that sets SuperTrapp apart from all exhausts. A tunable exhaust means you can add discs to increase flow and peak horsepower or remove them to increase low-end torque and reduce sound. Such technology allows riders to adjust the exhaust to meet code regulations around the country.

Another exhaust to watch for is the XR750, a 4-step pipe that Jay Springsteen will be testing very soon. Keep an eye out for this exhaust. It will be sensational.

Being Small
When you see racing legends like Jay Springsteen and Johnny Murphy, one thing you notice is their size. About 5'5" and 145 pounds, Jay is the ideal height and weight for a motorcycle racer. We call them motorcycle jockeys, and the comparison to horse jockeys makes a great deal of sense. A motorcycle racer needs to be strong for his or her size, but just as important as size is strength. Sure, the racers have to be able to maneuver their bikes to win, but - the smaller you are the more you can literally become aerodynamic and be “one with bike.” And because you're lighter on the bike, the bike doesn't have to work as hard to gain speed. Of course, Jay's strength comes from his agility, natural athleticism and the fact that he takes care of his body. But his natural strength comes from the fact that he's the ideal height and weight for a motorcycle racer.

Speaking of winning - so far Jay's been having a great season. He came in second to Chris Carr in the Springfield Mile, and he's training for a Fall rematch in Springfield on Labor Day 2006. Jay's practicing to make sure he'll be at the top of the podium in Springfield. Knowing Jay, I'd say he's got a good shot at meeting his expectations.

This Issue's Testimonial
This testimonial comes from Jeff Jensen in Florida, who writes: “I received my Megaphone Series Slip Ons for my Harley touring bike. Once again, I am impressed with the quality, fit, and finish of your products. (I previously owned your Supermegs 2:1.) Installed with 12 disks per side, I couldn't believe the difference in bottom end with my true duals. I believe these mufflers are the answer to “loss of bottom end” issues everyone seems to experience when switching from the OEM touring head pipes to true-duals.”
